A colloid is a substance that is in between liquid and solid in a sense. When left alone it is a liquid, but if you strike it, the surface tension quickly multiplies and it becomes solid.
Currently the military is looking at creating body armor with a strong enough colloidal mixture. One prototype is activated by electricity, just like the cape in the new Batman movies.
This technology is also being explored with padding for sports and stunts. This makes the pads super thin so they can fit under clothing well but still strong enough to provide protection. Right now the pads are expensive, but as time goes on the price should come down and more feedback on performance will be available.
